“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

Anacortes...Again
My wife has a term she coined to describe a certain type of light near sunset. The sun will suddenly break through a crack in the clouds and illuminate everything in the foreground while the scene in the distance will remain under the gloom. It is a scene we saw very often when we lived in Portland and even though we've lived in Seattle for over eight years, we still refer to it by it's original name. No matter what we are doing or where we are, when that sun pops out of nowhere, one of us screams, "Oregon Light."

Rushing Waters
Answer: One more pair than you bring.
Evidently four pairs were not enough to keep him dry or warm but he did tough it out through sunset without too much complaining.....It might have had something to do with me offering pancakes for dinner as a bribe.

Things My Son Found
My 5 year old son found this scene as we were climbing over the rocks last Sunday. There was suddenly silence and I saw him staring down into a crack. I asked him what he was up to. "Just watching the water chasing itself through the rocks", he replied.

Sunset at Anacortes
While the Seattle Seahawks were busy losing in Atlanta on Sunday, my son and I decided to take advantage of the dry weather and empty roads. We headed up to Anacortes and found the beautiful shoreline nearly deserted. After an afternoon of running from waves, climbing over rocks, and ducking under driftwood, we scored some fantastic light at sunset. The little guy sat silently behind me while munching on a bag of carrots, completely mesmerized by the color...silently that is until he started screaming "THE SUN IS TURNING EVERYTHING TO GOLD!"
He got that right :)

Rock And Sun
“Men come and go, cities rise and fall, whole civilizations appear and disappear-the earth remains, slightly modified. The earth remains, and the heartbreaking beauty where there are no hearts to break....I sometimes choose to think, no doubt perversely, that man is a dream, thought an illusion, and only rock is real. Rock and sun.”

Late Night Ramblings And A Pretty Photo
Neskowin Creek flowing past Proposal Rock, over the beach, and into the ocean on the Oregon Coast at sunset.....well, that is a long and poorly constructed sentence but I'm too tired and/or lazy to rewrite it right now....maybe a snack will help...but I would have to walk downstairs to get it...probably not worth the effort...unless there is some of my son's leftover mac 'n cheese in the fridge...would he notice??? probably but I can always deal with that tomorrow....life is full of disappointments and he needs to get over that... right?...sigh...I'll just have the hummus...

A New Year
The first sunset of the New Year. My son accompanied me, got wet, and got cold. There were a few tears but after a couple of hugs and a warm dinner, he emphatically told me he wanted to go again. It's going to be a good year.
