Down By The Waterline

Sunset at the Mukilteo ferry terminal.

Goodbye To Summer

The days still feel like summer up here in the Pacific Northwest but when the sun starts to sink, you can feel that autumn is not far away. The sunset is earlier, the evening temperatures are colder and the water is starting to get a little chilly for wading.

I picked my son up from school the other day and went out hunting for a sunset. We didn't find any amazing color but we did bag a couple of ferries up at Mukilteo.

Picnic Point Revisited

Another image from last week at Picnic Point along the Puget Sound. I am sooooooo fortunate to live just a hop, skip, and a jump from here...well not literally, but you know what I mean.

Sunset On The Sound

I managed to get down to the nearest beach to meet up with a couple of local photographers for sunset yesterday. It was low tide and the stream had recently carved a bend through the sand right as it entered the Puget Sound...something I had never seen there before. I love how you can visit a spot 20 or 30 times and it is never quite the same.

Picnic Point

Another image of the sunset over the Puget Sound on Sunday evening. Thank goodness it was summer since I had to stand in a couple of feet of water to get this composition :)

Close To Home

My son and I made a last minute dash down to Picnic Point after he decided he would rather go to the beach and see sunset than watch a storm chasing video together (both pretty good options in my mind anyway). Who should come strolling across the beach and join us at the last minute but Michael Riffle, a local photographer I know. The sunset never exploded but clouds in the sky were cool and it was great talking to Michael and trading ideas about locations in the area.

Cape Meares

When we were living in Portland, one of favorite photo strategies was to try to catch sunset as a storm was clearing. I would watch the radar all day and if the trailing cold front was approaching offshore, I would hop in the car and make a dash for the coast. The front and I would usually meet with a heavy downpour somewhere over the Coast Range and the driving would get dicey but the results were often worth the effort.

Panic Bag

I keep a panic bag in my office...not the kind to stave off impending social collapse or world doom but packed with goodies to take advantage of any last minute light. It is a small bag, easily stuffed into a backpack, filled with only the essentials, and designed to travel light and fast. Inside are my Nikon body, two zoom lenses, a couple of graduated neutral density filters, polarizing filter, remote release, and a backup battery. Everything I need to create something out of nearly every situation. So now, when conditions start to improve without any warning, we can gulp down our dinner, leave the dishes on the table, and be out the door in minutes. That is assuming my son is not dragging his heels ;)  Do you have a "photo panic" bag always packed and what is in yours?

Rushing Waters

Question of the day: How may changes of socks do you need to bring your 5 year old on a day trip to keep him dry and warm?

Answer: One more pair than you bring.

Evidently four pairs were not enough to keep him dry or warm but he did tough it out through sunset without too much complaining.....It might have had something to do with me offering pancakes for dinner as a bribe.

Quick Shoot...And A Pizza

I was stuck at home on Tuesday waiting for UPS to deliver a package because I was too cheap to pay the fee to schedule a delivery. Mercifully, they arrived at 3:15 which left me exactly one hour til sunset for a shoot. I never gave my destination choice much thought because Picnic Point on the Puget Sound is only a couple minutes from my house. The light was soft and pastel, and the water was glassy and calm. I hung out for awhile and watched the light fade away, then picked up a pizza on the way home for the family. Sausage and peppers if you want to know.....Life is good!
